For She Loved Him So
35cm x 45cm, oil on canvas
Inspired by Penelope’s long vigil for Odysseus, For She Loved Him So also takes its name from the jazz standard Poor Butterfly and from Puccini’s tragic opera Madama Butterfly. A woman stands at the water’s edge, patient and faithful, waiting for the man she loves to return, as he promised, and resisting the well-intentioned urges of those around her that to do so is in vain.
