At First Light
A series of small paintings made in the early hours of the day.
New works are released in small, regular drops, each offering a limited number of paintings.
Early mornings in my studio, before the day truly begins. I throw a jumper over my nightdress, slip my feet into soft socks, go downstairs and make coffee. Without so much as a glance back upstairs towards my warm bed, I open the back doors, walk a few steps to my studio and breathe in the smell of oil paints and turps. There is no better olfactory pleasure, in my mind, than that of early morning fresh air, coffee and a painter’s studio.
The work is done in sets of three. Three 20cm canvas boards line up on my old trestle table. Overalls and gloves on, I start mixing the colours. Then, often with the soothing sounds of BBC Radio 3 gently swooping through my sleepy thoughts, I start to paint instinctively, with a carefully chosen palette, whatever wants to emerge.
The results have given me a new found peaceful joy. Time alone, with my thoughts unfolding, regrouping and sorting as I apply paint, time taken for myself and my work before anything or anyone else can get to it, these are precious hours.
The result: small, instinctive canvases, ideas for larger works, and worlds within themselves. Follow my instagram @paintandhaven so as not to miss the regular drops of new paintings. First come, first served. Entry level pricing, collectable, original works from my imagination to yours
